Education for Family and Friends

Educational workshops are provided by our Counsellors and Education Coordinators on a regular basis on issues pertaining to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. These include workshops on the different stages of the disease, caregiver stress and coping strategies.

1. Alzheimer Society Services: A Place to Begin

Have you ever wondered what the Alzheimer Society of Toronto can do for you? If so, please join us for a general information session. The presentation includes an overview of Society services (including counselling and referrals, support groups, education and information services), and provides details on supportive agencies in the community. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Workshop 1.  Alzheimer's 101

This workshop for family caregivers provides an overview of Alzheimer’s disease, coping strategies and services in the community.

Workshop 4.  Activities to do with Your Family Member

This workshop will help caregivers find effective activities for their family member. The goal is to give practical ideas on how family members can spend quality time together by identifying and drawing upon the person's remaining strengths.

This educational session is for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and their family caregivers.

This workshop for family caregivers addresses the physical, social and ethical issues associated with the late stages of Alzheimer's disease and also provides them with a model for decision-making.

Workshop 12. Moving to Long-Term Care

This set of three educational workshops aims to give family caregivers an overview of issues related to Long-term care. Family members may choose to attend any or all three sessions.


Session 1: Decisions and choices
Making the decision, caregiving options, benefits & limitations, and facility assessment.

Session 2: Applying to long-term care
A guest speaker from the CCAC will explain the process of application to long-term care.

Session 3: Adjustment and day to day life in long-term care
Helping caregivers prepare and adjust to their family member entering a long-term care facility, including advocacy, adjustment strategies and caregiver coping.
