Education Programs
Our Public Education Coordinators offer dementia specific education to professionals working with people with dementia in a variety of settings including long term care homes, community agencies, supportive housing and retirement homes.
Our programs are flexible and geared toward the learning needs of different groups including personal support workers, activationists, nursing, dietary and housekeeping staff, students, volunteers, friendly visitors.
These programs can be offered to groups at your facility or at Alzheimer Society of Toronto offices.

Programs:
Dementia Certification Training Program
The training program will help you:
- Learn the U-First! common language, common values, and a team approach to managing responsive behaviours.
- Understand the nature and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Learn new ways to communicate with someone with Alzheimer’s disease.
- Understand the factors that contribute to responsive behaviours.
- Experience an Aging Simulation to have a better understanding of the physical and sensory changes related to aging.
Dates:
This training program consists of four 3-hour sessions. Choose one of the following options:
Option 1: Social Workers (SWs)
Thursdays: January 5, 12, 19 & 26
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m
Option 2: Personal Support Workers (PSWs)
Tuesdays: January 10, 17, 24 & 31
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. FULL
Option 3: Personal Support Workers (PSWs)
Saturday: January 7, 14, 21, & February 4
9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. FULL

for a free full day workshop.

Gentle Persuasive Approaches in Dementia Care:
Responding to Persons with Challenging Behaviours
A full day interactive workshop from the Continuing Gerontological Education Cooperative (CGEC) for all levels of staff and departments in organizations that care for persons with dementia.
- Based on principles of person centred care.
- Respond respectfully and with confidence and skill to challenging behaviours associated with dementia
- Certification issued upon completion through the GPA Project.
Additional Seminars
These free seminars are flexible, geared toward the learning needs of the participants.
